History

Founded in 1921, Maghull initially played a series of friendly fixtures before joining the I Zingari Alliance League in season 1922/23 so starting an allegiance to I Zingari football on Merseyside which was to go unbroken until 1960 when the club reluctantly resigned from the I Zingari League and successfully applied to join the Liverpool County Combination.

In 1972 we joined the Lancashire Combination and six years later the Cheshire County League before in 1988 the two league amalgamated to form the North West Counties league with Maghull being one of the founder members. Rising costs and restrictions on the development of our existing facilities forced the club to end their 17 year association with the North West Counties League in 1998 when we were accepted as members of the Carlsberg West Cheshire League Division 1 in the 1999-2000 season where we remain today.

Situated 8 miles north of Liverpool on the main A59 Preston Road, Maghull originally played their home games at Boyer Fields before changing their ground in 1928 to Pimbley Playing Fields which was sited off Deyes Lane where the present Maghull Church of England infants school stands, just one mile away from their existing Old Hall ground in Hall Lane where they took up occupancy in 1954.

In over 100 years of existence the Club boasts a host of silverware.
The Liverpool County Amateur Cup, Liverpool County Challenge Cup, Lancashire Amateur Cup, Lancashire Combination Challenge Cup, Liverpool County Combination League Winners, Liverpool I Zingari League & Cup winners, Bass North West Counties Division Two Winners and Lamot Pils Trophy Runners up. Maghull, were N.W. Counties Division 2 Champions, as recently as 1993. Carlsberg West Cheshire honours include back to back winning of the league’s Pyke Cup Competition in 2011 and 2012 with the ultimate West Cheshire success being First Division Champions in 2014. In that same season the Reserve team lifted the Howarth and Gallagher Bowl.

Following a fire in 1991, which destroyed their dressing rooms and Clubhouse, Maghull erected a new building, which houses fine dressing rooms and a comfortable Lounge Bar. In the build up to it’s Centenary the clubhouse bar & lounge area has had an extensive modern refit ready to take the club into it’s next chapter as we look to gain promotion back into the North West Counties.

Maghull Football Club is are eagerly run by an active and extensive committee of volunteers, many of whom are ex-players and ex managers of the club. Five of our committee members have been honoured by the FA having served football for over fifty years, congratulations go to Les Jacques, Andy Boyd, Ron Young, Fred Smith and Bill Buck on this incredible achievement in recognition to their services to the club and the wider Football Community.
