Maghull Suffer First League Defeat in Thornton Cleveleys Thriller
Saturday, September 06, 2025 saw the 1st team in action at Thornton Cleveleys in the NWCFL 1st Division North.
Match Summary: Maghull FC succumbed to their first league defeat of the season, falling 5-2 away to Thornton Cleveleys. The game was dominated by a stunning performance from the home side’s Luke Noble, who scored four goals, denying Maghull the chance to retain their spot at the top of the table.
Despite the final score, Maghull started the match on the front foot and were the brighter of the two sides initially. The visitors were rewarded for their early pressure in the 16th minute when Darren Brannigan finished superbly to give Maghull a deserved early lead.
However, the momentum shifted just after the midway point of the half. Against the run of play, Thornton Cleveleys levelled the score in the 25th minute through Archie Lang. The home side then edged in front just before the break when Luke Noble grabbed his first goal of the day with a close-range strike.
The half-time score stood at 2-1 to Thornton Cleveleys.
The second half began in frustrating fashion for Maghull. Just five minutes after the restart, Luke Noble struck again in the 50th minute, extending Thornton’s lead to 3-1.
Maghull showed resilience and refused to lie down. In the 63rd minute, Sam Smith pulled one back for the visitors with a fine finish to make the score 3-2, bringing the game back into the balance and setting up a grandstand finish.
Maghull pressed hard for the equaliser, causing the home defence problems. However, their efforts were compounded by controversy when two very strong penalty shouts late in the game were waved away by the referee, sparking disbelief and anger among the Maghull camp.
As Maghull committed bodies forward, trying desperately to level the scores, Thornton Cleveleys exploited the space on the counter. Luke Noble was the chief beneficiary, adding a third goal and then a fourth to his tally late in the game to put the result beyond doubt. His late brace made the final score 5-2, which ultimately made the result look far more comfortable than the balance of play at 3-2 had suggested.
The defeat means Maghull slip to second place in the NWCFL First Division North table, two points behind the new leaders Droylsden. Crucially, however, Maghull still have a game in hand. The team will be confident of bouncing back in their next fixture.
