Maghull March On in FA Vase with Dominant Away Win

Saturday, August 23, 2025 saw the 1st team in action at Frickley Athletic in the 1st Qualifying Round of the Isuzu FA Vase

Match Summary: Maghull FC continued their excellent start to the season by clinching a comprehensive 5-1 away victory against Frickley Athletic to progress to the next round of the FA Vase. The result against the higher-tier Frickley side was a testament to Maghull’s sharp attacking intent and growing confidence.

Maghull couldn’t have asked for a better start, taking the lead just three minutes into the contest. Sam Smith expertly nicked the ball, drove into the box, and slotted the ball home coolly.

Despite the early setback, Frickley saw a fair amount of possession throughout the half and had opportunities, but a combination of some solid goalkeeping from Maghull’s keeper and a disallowed equaliser meant the visitors held their narrow advantage. The half-time score stood at 0-1.

Maghull came out firing for the second half and quickly extended their lead. In the 48th minute, Darren Brannigan tapped in following a brilliant cross from Harrison Worden.

The game was effectively put beyond the hosts just past the hour mark when Harrison Worden converted from the penalty spot (61st minute) after a foul in the box. Frickley’s task became even harder when they were reduced to ten men shortly thereafter.

Maghull capitalised almost immediately. Sam Smith bagged his second of the afternoon, smashing in a lovely volley in the 71st minute. The rout was completed in the 80th minute when an Own Goal from a corner saw the ball glanced into the Frickley net.

Frickley managed to grab a late consolation goal in the 87th minute via a penalty converted by Ifeanyi Nnenanya, but the job had long been done by the visitors.

The final score of 1-5 seals a brilliant away day for Maghull, who march confidently on in the FA Vase competition.
