Maghull Storm to the Top with First-Half Blitz Against Nelson

Saturday, August 16, 2025 saw the 1st team take on Nelson in the NWCFL 1st Division North

Match Summary: Maghull FC delivered a blistering performance at the DT Hughes Community Stadium, securing a resounding 5-1 victory over Nelson FC to surge to the top of the league table. The win was built on a ferocious and clinical first-half display that completely overwhelmed the visitors.

The hosts were in front almost instantly, with Jacob Till finishing smartly in the 4th minute to set the tone for the afternoon. Before Nelson could regroup, Maghull doubled their advantage just two minutes later when Darren Brannigan found the net with a composed strike.

The relentless pressure continued, with Nelson struggling to cope with the hosts’ tempo. Nathan Moffitt added a third goal on 23 minutes. The lead became commanding with a quick-fire brace from Sam Smith, who struck first in the 26th minute and then again in the 33rd minute, completing the five-goal haul before the half-time whistle.

Maghull went into the break leading 5-0, a scoreline that reflected a dominant and highly impressive display of fast-paced, attacking football.

The second half inevitably lacked the same frantic pace, with Maghull focusing on professionalism and game management from their position of strength. Nelson did manage to pull a goal back in the 55th minute through Jack Doherty, preventing Maghull from securing a clean sheet. However, this proved to be a mere consolation.

Maghull comfortably saw out the remainder of the match, delighting the 245 supporters in attendance. The 5-1 victory not only extended Maghull’s impressive run of form in the early season but also cemented their place at the summit of the NWCFL First Division North table.
